Missing the Moral

Sometime last week we read aloud the story of The Little Red Hen…the hen nobody helps when it comes to planting, weeding and harvesting the wheat.  The hen that in the end bakes the bread herself and eats it–the whole darn loaf.

And I wondered if there wasn’t something about the hen’s dull solicitations–“Who will help me…who will help me…” that elicited the same lack of help.

I gave it a try.

“Who will help me clean the living room?”

I grinned at the sound of myself.

My son thought hard for half a second and then answered calmly, “Not I!”

That’s what I thought.
