Trying to Focus Here

With her word list in my hand, I said it again.  “Certificate.  Cer-ti-fi-cate.”

My daughter readied herself.  She blew her breath through her lips; she twisted her hair around a finger; she picked at the paint on her pencil.  “C-E-R..,” she finally began.  “T-I..”

And…

And it’s likely she’d have remembered to finish spelling the rest if…

without warning…

or invitation…

or any knowledge of the subject…

my son hadn’t shouted, “CERVIX,” from the hallway.

 

But he did.
