We were face to face across lawn chairs both shoveling in cereal when my son spoke.
“There was this other kid at grandma’s house,” he said.
I listened with my eyes.
“Really,” he nodded. “And he said he had two girlfriends.”
I felt my eyebrows raise.
“And,” my son continued. “And he asked if I had two girlfriends.”
He laughed at the absurdity.
I watched him giggle.
“But I told him,” he said, “that I had only one girlfriend.”
I found my voice. “Oh?”
“Yeah,” my son whispered. He smiled a big one.
Then…with the spoon he yanked from his cereal, he pointed to my heart and said…
You’re my girlfriend, mommy!”
