Heart Song

Sometimes when he erupts into a homemade tune with equally homemade lyrics, I go motionless, straining to enjoy every word.

Because unconsciously, my son sings about bed time or the cat or the Pledge of Allegiance.  And I don’t want to miss it.

It’s just that today’s melody wasn’t his own. And the words weren’t made up.

They poured, instead, from his heart and past his lips with tenderness and fortitude.

“Bless the Lord, oh my soul…ohhhhh my soul…”

And he never tired of them.

At the Y.

In the car.

In the backyard beating the leaves with a broom.
